China North Industries Group Corporation Limited
China North Industries Group (NORINCO) is one of China's two large defence-industrial conglomerates, wholly owned by the State and supervised by SASAC. Beyond weapons and ordnance it operates petrochemicals, mining, optical equipment and civilian machinery through subsidiaries such as Inner Mongolia First Machinery and Changchun Yidong. FY2024 revenue was CN¥436.79 billion.
Strengths: as a designated central enterprise, NORINCO holds the domestic position in land-system procurement and can plan production over multi-year horizons without shareholder pressure. Its civilian businesses — petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, machinery — smooth defence order cycles and give it commercial scale that pure defence contractors lack. It also controls a deep supplier network across western and north-eastern China.
Weaknesses: disclosure is minimal compared with listed peers, and the group sits under US export-control and sanctions restrictions, which constrains access to Western components and finance. Revenue is concentrated in state procurement whose timing is political rather than market-driven. Civilian segments operate in commoditised markets where margins are thin and competition from private Chinese firms is intense.Read MoreShow Less
