Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company
Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company is one of the largest US mutual insurance and financial-services groups, owned by its policyholders and founded in 1926. It writes auto, home, commercial and life insurance, and runs Nationwide Financial for retirement and asset management, plus allied businesses such as Pet Nationwide and Nationwide Agribusiness. FY2023 revenue was US$58.65 billion.
Strengths: mutuality lets Nationwide hold capital through underwriting cycles instead of being forced to shrink in bad years, and its multi-line platform — personal, commercial, agribusiness, financial services — spreads risk across very different loss drivers. The group also owns one of the largest US farm-insurance operations, a niche with high barriers to entry and long-standing agent relationships.
Weaknesses: the US personal-lines market is intensely price-competitive, and Nationwide has ceded share to direct-to-consumer insurers that carry lower distribution costs. Catastrophe losses in its concentrated Midwestern and coastal books have grown with climate volatility. As a mutual it cannot issue stock, which limits its capacity for large acquisitions or for rebuilding surplus after a major event.Read MoreShow Less
