Barrick Mining Corporation

Barrick

Barrick Mining Corporation is a Toronto gold and copper producer incorporated in 1983 and renamed from Barrick Gold Corporation on 6 May 2025, a change that followed the build-out of a second metal rather than a new strategy. The head office sits at TD Canada Trust Tower, 161 Bay Street, Suite 3700, and the group employs 27,000 people, with a dual primary listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:B) and the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX:ABX). FY2025 revenue of USD 16.956 billion produced operating income of USD 7.916 billion and net income of USD 4.993 billion, against total assets of USD 51.577 billion, liabilities of USD 15.661 billion and equity of USD 35.916 billion; the market capitalisation stood at USD 62.01 billion on a share price of USD 37.01. Operating scope covers 13 gold and 3 copper mining complexes in 18 countries, among them six Tier One gold mines, and 2025 attributable output was 3.26 Moz of gold and 220 kt of copper.

Strengths: Six Tier One mines give Barrick a production base that few gold producers can match: Nevada Gold Mines, held at 61.5% and carrying 1.65 Moz, is the largest gold mining complex in the world, and Pueblo Viejo (60%, 0.41 Moz), Kibali (45%, 0.33 Moz) and Loulo-Gounkoto (80%, 0.29 Moz) add three more long-life anchors. Reserves of 85 Moz of contained gold at 0.98 g/t support a 20-year mine life, with a further 18 Mt of contained copper at 0.46% Cu and a 25-year life, and every ounce is sold unhedged, so a realised gold price of USD 3,501/oz against all-in sustaining costs of USD 1,637/oz turns price strength directly into cash.

Weaknesses: The flagship assets are joint ventures rather than wholly owned mines, so 38.5% of Nevada Gold Mines and 55% of Kibali belong to partners and capital decisions at those complexes require agreement rather than instruction. Gold still supplies 86.2% of revenue (USD 14.62 billion) against 13.8% from copper (USD 2.34 billion), which leaves the equity exposed to one price even as the corporate name advertises two, and attributable capital expenditure of USD 3.174 billion in FY2025 (USD 3.821 billion consolidated) is heavy for ore grading 0.98 g/t. Guidance for FY2026 of 2.90-3.25 Moz gold and 190-220 kt copper points to flat-to-lower volumes, and the Malian complex only restarted in late 2025 after a prolonged dispute with the state.

Industry Position

Gold is priced in a market that no single producer sets. Mine supply, recycled scrap and central-bank purchases meet jewellery, investment and industrial demand through the London and New York over-the-counter markets, and the LBMA fixings provide the reference against which doré, concentrate and refined bars are settled. Barrick realised USD 3,501/oz in 2025, 2.01% above the LBMA Gold Price PM, and USD 4.72/lb for copper, 4.65% above LME cash. Attributable output of 3.26 Moz places the company in the first rank of listed gold producers alongside Newmont and Agnico Eagle Mines, while 220 kt of copper is small next to the volumes delivered by Freeport-McMoRan or Southern Copper.

The two metals obey different mechanics. Gold responds to real interest rates, currency reserve policy and investment flows, and a producer's realised price tracks the fixing closely, which is why a 2.01% premium is a rounding matter and not a commercial achievement. Copper is an exchange-traded industrial metal whose concentrate is sold to smelters under treatment and refining charges that sit between the mine gate and the metal price; demand comes from grids, construction and electrification, and supply growth requires porphyry deposits that take a decade or more to permit and build.

Scale matters for a plain reason. Ore bodies are long-lived and capital-hungry, and only a large balance sheet can fund a 25-year copper expansion while replacing a 20-year gold reserve. Barrick carries total assets of USD 51.577 billion against liabilities of USD 15.661 billion and equity of USD 35.916 billion, and it converted USD 16.956 billion of revenue into USD 7.916 billion of operating income in FY2025, up from USD 4.712 billion the year before as prices rose and volumes held.

Competitive Advantages

The margin per ounce is the first advantage, and it is arithmetic rather than assertion: all-in sustaining costs of USD 1,637/oz against a realised USD 3,501/oz leave about USD 1,864 before tax on every ounce sold. Agnico Eagle runs a lower AISC at USD 1,180/oz, but its reserve grade of 1.58 g/t is a different kind of ore body, narrower and deeper, and its 53.8 Moz reserve base is smaller than Barrick's 85 Moz. On a portfolio basis the lower grade is offset by bulk tonnage and by mine life.

Reserve duration is the second. Eighty-five million ounces of contained gold at 0.98 g/t and 18 Mt of contained copper at 0.46% Cu give the group a 20-year gold book and a 25-year copper book, measured to NI 43-101 standards at the end of 2025. Long reserve life matters more to a gold equity than a single year of production, because it determines how many price cycles the asset base can be worked through without acquisitive replacement.

Selling everything unhedged is the third. With no gold or copper hedges in place, the company holds a full-length position in both prices, and the FY2025 result shows what that means when bullion trades above USD 3,500: net income of USD 4.993 billion on 3.26 Moz. A hedging programme truncates that upside in exchange for visibility, and Barrick has chosen the opposite trade, accepting the downside as the price of the full move.

The partnership model deserves mention as an advantage rather than only a constraint. Holding 61.5% of the world's largest gold complex with Newmont carrying 38.5% means Barrick controls the operator's seat while a partner funds a substantial share of the capital, and the same logic applies at Pueblo Viejo (60/40) and Kibali (45/45/10). Few gold companies obtain operating control of assets of that size without paying for all of them.

Strategic Expansion

Copper is where the growth is being directed. The rename from Barrick Gold to Barrick Mining on 6 May 2025 was a statement about mix, and the two projects that justify it are the Lumwana Super Pit in Zambia, which takes a wholly owned mine from 150 kt to 240 kt a year, and Reko Diq, the large undeveloped copper-gold project in the pipeline. Neither is yet producing at expanded rates, which is why FY2026 copper guidance of 190-220 kt sits below the 220 kt delivered in 2025.

Capital allocation follows the same order. Of USD 3.174 billion of attributable expenditure in FY2025, USD 1.85 billion went to sustaining the existing complexes and USD 1.324 billion to growth, a split that keeps the current mines running while the copper build proceeds. Consolidated capital expenditure of USD 3.821 billion is the better guide to the group's gross commitment, since partners fund part of it.

Organic expansion inside the Tier One complexes carries less execution risk than greenfield construction, and Pueblo Viejo, Kibali and Loulo-Gounkoto all sit in jurisdictions where the company already operates. The trade-off is that incremental ounces from mature complexes are harder to obtain than ounces from a new district, and Reko Diq will take years to reach the point where it moves group volumes.

Risks & Outlook

Price exposure is symmetric and undiluted. Gold supplies 86.2% of revenue, copper 13.8%, and no hedge stands between the mine and the market, so a fall in bullion passes through as directly as the 2025 rise did. The same policy that produced USD 4.993 billion of net income in a strong year would produce a sharp contraction in a weak one, and the 0.98 g/t reserve grade leaves little room for cost inflation to be absorbed at the ore face.

Jurisdiction is the second exposure, and it is not hypothetical. The Malian complex stopped and only resumed in late 2025 after a dispute with the State of Mali, Kibali operates in the Democratic Republic of the Congo at 45% ownership, and Lumwana sits in Zambia where fiscal terms and power supply have both moved before. Joint-venture consent rights add a further layer: a partner's board can slow a decision the operator wants to take.

The near-term shape is set by guidance rather than ambition. FY2026 output of 2.90-3.25 Moz gold and 190-220 kt copper implies stable-to-lower volumes while the copper expansion is built, with USD 3.174 billion of capital spending carried against that output. What the market is being asked to underwrite is a two-metal producer with a 20-year gold book, a 25-year copper book and full spot exposure, at a share price of USD 37.01 and a market value of USD 62.01 billion. The profile closes with a VerityRank Score of 88/100.
