Diamondback Energy, Inc.

Diamondback Energy

Diamondback Energy, Inc. is a Permian Basin pure-play that drills horizontal wells for crude oil, natural gas liquids and natural gas across roughly 885,000 net acres in the Midland and Delaware basins of West Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The company was founded in 2007, is headquartered at 500 West Texas Avenue in Midland, Texas, and employs about 1,762 people. Its shares trade on NASDAQ under the ticker FANG, and at the end of October 2026 the market capitalization was about USD 61.57 billion at a share price of USD 212.08. Crude oil supplied 77.3% of FY2025 revenue of USD 15.03 billion, natural gas liquids 9.3%, natural gas 2.8% and midstream, marketing and other activity 10.5%. Net income was USD 1.66 billion on operating income of USD 1.27 billion, and the September 2024 purchase of Endeavor Energy Resources for USD 26 billion in cash and stock reshaped the operated footprint in the Midland Basin, while the majority-owned royalty subsidiary Viper Energy adds production with no capital burden.

Strengths: The asset sits in the lowest quartile of the North American shale cost curve, with inventory that breaks even below USD 40 per barrel of WTI and lease operating expense of USD 5.55 per boe in 2025, one of the lowest figures reported by any Permian operator. Proved reserves of 1,773 MMboe of crude oil, 977 MMboe of natural gas liquids and 868 MMboe of natural gas support roughly ten to twelve years of production at current rates, and the acreage is contiguous enough to run long laterals and shared facilities across the Midland and Delaware positions. Hedging covered about 45% of volumes on a rolling twelve- to eighteen-month basis and lifted the combined realized price from USD 34.02 per boe to USD 34.88 per boe in 2025, and Viper's 406.0 MMboe of proved royalty reserves generates cash at zero lease operating cost.

Weaknesses: Revenue leans heavily on one commodity and one basin, with crude oil at 77.3% of FY2025 revenue and the entire portfolio inside the Permian. Realizations on the co-products are poor: natural gas liquids fetched USD 17.88 per barrel in 2025, some 72.5% below WTI, and natural gas sold at USD 0.91 per Mcf, 73.2% below Henry Hub, because in-basin takeaway is short and gas is often a cost of doing business rather than a product. The balance sheet carries USD 28.09 billion of liabilities against USD 42.97 billion of equity after the Endeavor transaction, capital expenditure is guided to USD 3.95 to USD 4.00 billion for FY2026, and a single family holding of 31.2% concentrates governance in one bloc.

Industry Position

The Permian Basin is the marginal barrel of U.S. crude supply and the only onshore region in the country that can add meaningful volume within a year of a price signal. Its output is priced off WTI at Midland, which trades at a discount or premium to Cushing depending on pipeline takeaway, and exported through Gulf Coast terminals that connect the basin to Asian and European refiners. Diamondback holds roughly 885,000 net acres across the Midland and Delaware basins, making it one of the largest pure-play operators in the region by acreage and production.

Supply economics in shale are set by the inventory of undrilled locations rather than by the size of the resource. Tier-one rock that breaks even below USD 40 per barrel is finite, and the industry has spent a decade consolidating to control it: Diamondback's USD 26 billion acquisition of Endeavor Energy in September 2024 is the clearest example, and it moved the company from a Midland-focused driller into a two-basin operator with roughly 0.72 MMboe/d in the Midland core and 0.15 MMboe/d in the Delaware.

Demand for the barrel is set globally. OPEC+ spare capacity, the pace of non-OPEC supply growth and Chinese storage decisions move WTI more than anything the company does, so the industry position that matters is relative: cost per barrel, inventory life and the ability to keep capital spending inside cash flow. With 1,773 MMboe of proved crude reserves and a ten-year reserve life, Diamondback sits in the low-cost, short-life end of the curve where capital discipline is the whole game.

Competitive Advantages

Lifting cost of USD 5.55 per boe in 2025 is the clearest number in the case. It reflects scale in the Midland Basin, where contiguous acreage allows long laterals, multi-well pads and shared water and power infrastructure, and it leaves a wide margin between cash cost and the sub-USD 40 breakeven that management cites for its inventory. EOG Resources and ConocoPhillips run comparable cost positions at much larger scale; Devon Energy, Permian Resources, Occidental and Coterra compete for the same service crews and the same takeaway.

The hedge book is a second layer. About 45% of volumes are protected through deferred premium puts and wide two-way collars on a rolling twelve- to eighteen-month horizon, which is enough to cover the base dividend and maintenance capital without capping much upside. In 2025 that program lifted the combined realized price from USD 34.02 per boe to USD 34.88 per boe, a modest but real contribution in a year when WTI averaged in the mid-sixties and the company realized USD 64.04 per barrel on crude, within 1.5% of the benchmark.

Viper Energy is the third. A 54%-owned royalty subsidiary with 406.0 MMboe of proved reserves collects revenue from third-party operated wells without paying drilling or lifting costs, which converts part of the portfolio into a high-margin, low-capital annuity. That is an advantage EOG and ConocoPhillips do not replicate at the same scale, and it gives Diamondback a listed currency and a separate valuation pool for acquisitions of minerals rather than working interests.

Strategic Expansion

The Endeavor combination is the central strategic fact. Absorbing a private Midland operator of that size consolidated acreage, eliminated overlapping overhead and gave the company a deeper runway of drillable locations at a moment when tier-one inventory in the basin was becoming scarce. Integration work now runs through pad design, water handling and the redeployment of rigs across a larger contiguous position rather than through headline acreage additions.

Guidance tells the operating story. Initial FY2026 guidance issued in February 2026 called for 0.500 to 0.510 MMboe/d of oil, or 0.926 to 0.962 MMboe/d of total equivalent; by the November 2, 2026 update the full-year oil average had been raised to about 0.524 MMboe/d, or roughly 1.015 MMboe/d total, with fourth-quarter guidance of 0.518 to 0.528 MMboe/d. Capital expenditure for FY2026 was set at USD 3.95 to USD 4.00 billion, up from USD 3.523 billion in FY2025, so the growth is funded by a larger program rather than by acquired volume.

Beyond the drill bit, the levers are Viper's mineral acquisition pipeline, water and power infrastructure that lowers operating cost per barrel, and opportunistic bolt-ons of small private operators whose acreage fits existing development units. None of those require a new basin or a new commodity, which is consistent with a strategy that has never diversified away from the Permian and has instead concentrated on being the lowest-cost operator inside it.

Risks & Outlook

Commodity risk is direct. Crude oil was 77.3% of FY2025 revenue, the company is unhedged on more than half its volumes, and a WTI price below the high thirties would compress free cash flow toward the maintenance threshold. Co-product realizations compound the exposure: natural gas liquids cleared at USD 17.88 per barrel, 72.5% below WTI, and gas at USD 0.91 per Mcf, 73.2% below Henry Hub, so weak in-basin takeaway can erode returns even when crude holds.

Basin concentration is the second risk. Every operated acre, every water line and every employee sits in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico, exposed to the same weather, the same pipeline constraints and the same regulatory environment. Permian takeaway capacity tightens periodically, and service cost inflation returns quickly when the whole industry raises activity at once, which is the setting implied by the FY2026 capital guidance increase.

Governance and reserve life round out the list. A 31.2% family holding gives one bloc effective influence over any merger or sale, and a ten-year reserve life means the company must keep replacing production with new drilling rather than harvesting a long-lived asset. The next two years should show whether the raised 0.524 MMboe/d oil guidance and USD 3.95 to USD 4.00 billion capital program generate free cash flow at mid-cycle prices; operating income of USD 1.27 billion on revenue of USD 15.03 billion in FY2025 shows how quickly leverage to the oil price cuts both ways. The profile closes with a VerityRank Score of 84/100.
