Focused Photonics (Hangzhou) Inc.
FPI
Focused Photonics is the company that Chinese policy has been trying to create for two decades: an indigenous manufacturer of high-end analytical instruments capable of displacing imports in mass spectrometry and optical spectroscopy. Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Hangzhou's Binjiang district, FPI develops and manufactures inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry systems, optical emission spectrometers and the process and environmental analysers that were once bought almost exclusively from Western and Japanese vendors. Its EXPEC Technology subsidiary specialises in laboratory-grade mass spectrometry.
The commercial results in 2025 were poor. Revenue fell 17.07 percent to RMB 2.997 billion and net profit attributable to shareholders was a loss of RMB 233 million, down 212 percent year on year, as competitive intensity increased, downstream demand contracted and customers delayed purchases. Operating cash flow remained positive at RMB 353 million against an order backlog of approximately RMB 3.7 billion. The company has stopped signing new public-private partnership contracts and is divesting the projects it holds, concentrating resources on scientific instruments, industrial analytical instruments and carbon measurement.
Strengths: Indigenous core components, including lasers, quadrupole mass analysers and ion sources, which insulate FPI from export controls and supply restrictions affecting imported analytical instruments. First-of-type domestic certifications for triple quadrupole and high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry, establishing FPI as the reference Chinese supplier in categories where imports previously dominated. Position inside China's environmental monitoring and carbon measurement programmes, where domestic instrument sourcing is an explicit policy objective. A broad installed base in Chinese industrial process analysis, built over two decades in steel, petrochemical and power generation. Four manufacturing and research parks in Hangzhou that support vertical integration from optical components to finished systems.
Weaknesses: Revenue declined 17 percent in 2025 and the company moved from profit to loss, with gross profit falling by RMB 463 million. Extreme dependence on a single national market, with roughly 92 percent of revenue generated in China and international penetration still at an early stage. Exposure to Chinese government and municipal budgets, which are the least predictable source of analytical instrument demand. A portfolio built around environmental monitoring, the segment most directly affected by the shift away from infrastructure-led spending. Revenue roughly one fifteenth that of Thermo Fisher, limiting the research budget available to close the technology gap in the highest-resolution instrument classes.Read More ▼Show Less ▲
