Kinross Gold Corporation

Kinross Gold

Kinross Gold Corporation is a Toronto-based senior gold producer with six operating mining complexes across the United States, Brazil, Mauritania, Chile and Canada. Founded in 1993, it employs 7,100 people and carries a market value of 24.53 USD bn at a share price of 27.82 CAD. FY2025 attributable gold production of 1.97 Moz and silver of 2.77 Moz generated revenue of 7.0511 USD bn, operating income of 3.2776 USD bn and net income of 2.3901 USD bn, against total assets of 12.4111 USD bn and equity of 8.6941 USD bn. Two assets do most of the work: Paracatu in Minas Gerais, the largest open pit in the group at 0.58 Moz, and Tasiast in Mauritania at 0.55 Moz with a 24,000 tonne per day mill behind it. Together they deliver more than half of output. The rest of the book is a mix of Alaskan and Nevadan open pits, Fort Knox at 0.38 Moz fed partly by the 70%-owned Manh Choh satellite, Round Mountain at 0.22 Moz, Bald Mountain at 0.18 Moz and La Coipa in Chile at 0.2 Moz. The development pipeline runs through Great Bear in Ontario, a 0.5 Moz project targeting late-2029 startup.

Strengths: Cash generation moved sharply in FY2025. Revenue rose from 5.1488 USD bn to 7.0511 USD bn while net income went from 0.9488 USD bn to 2.3901 USD bn, so the increment landed almost entirely at the bottom line. Realised gold of 3,423 USD/oz tracked the LBMA Gold Price PM within 0.2%, and there is no gold hedging at all, meaning spot moves reach earnings without a cap. The exposure is deliberate: management hedges foreign currency exposures in BRL, CLP and CAD and roughly 50% of 2027 oil, leaving the gold leg open. Balance sheet leverage is modest for a producer this size, with 3.717 USD bn of liabilities against 12.4111 USD bn of assets, which is a lighter structure than most senior peers carry. Silver is not incidental either, at 1.6% of revenue or 0.1142 USD bn, with La Coipa the main source. Great Bear adds a 0.5 Moz Canadian project to a portfolio otherwise weighted toward the Americas south of the border and one West African asset, giving the company a domestic growth option it did not have five years ago.

Weaknesses: Reserve quality is the structural weak point. The 20.9 Moz gold reserve sits at a grade of 0.85 g/t with a 10-year mine life, the thinnest combination among the senior producers covered here, which means tonnes rather than grade must do the work and any dilution bites directly into cost per ounce. Mine life of a decade leaves little margin for a delayed development project, and Great Bear does not pour gold until late 2029. The FY2026 guidance is the more immediate warning: output is guided to 1.84 to 1.86 Moz, below the 1.97 Moz delivered in FY2025, while all-in sustaining cost is guided to 1,850 to 1,900 USD/oz against 1,571 USD/oz in FY2025. Capex rises from 1.1752 USD bn attributable in FY2025 to 1.5 USD bn plus or minus 5% in FY2026, so the company is spending more, producing less and carrying a higher unit cost into the next year. Jurisdiction adds a second layer: Tasiast at 0.55 Moz is the only operating asset outside the OECD, and it is also the highest-margin mine in the portfolio, a pairing that concentrates both return and risk in one country.

Industry Position

Kinross sits in the middle of the senior gold tier by size and in the middle of the cost curve by economics. Attributable gold of 1.97 Moz in FY2025, revenue of 7.0511 USD bn and a market value of 24.53 USD bn place it below Newmont, Barrick and Agnico Eagle but comfortably above the mid-tier producers. The company was founded in 1993, employs 7,100 people and keeps its listing on both the TSX and the NYSE.

What defines the portfolio is the anchor pair. Paracatu at 0.58 Moz and Tasiast at 0.55 Moz together supply more than half of output, with Tasiast built around a 24,000 tonne per day mill and Paracatu the largest open pit in the group. The remaining assets, Fort Knox at 0.38 Moz, Round Mountain at 0.22 Moz, La Coipa at 0.2 Moz and Bald Mountain at 0.18 Moz, provide breadth but not the same cash weight.

The equity carries less leverage than peers of similar size. Total liabilities of 3.717 USD bn against 12.4111 USD bn of assets and 8.6941 USD bn of equity leave room to absorb a development cycle without a refinancing, which matters because that cycle has already started.

Competitive Advantages

Pricing is clean. Realised gold of 3,423 USD/oz came within 0.2% of the LBMA Gold Price PM, and with no gold hedges in place the company captures the full move in spot. That asymmetry works in both directions, but on the operating side the entire price is revenue rather than a capped portion of it.

The FY2025 result shows what that leverage does in a strong year: revenue of 7.0511 USD bn, operating income of 3.2776 USD bn and net income of 2.3901 USD bn, more than double the 0.9488 USD bn booked in FY2024 on revenue of 5.1488 USD bn. Margin expansion of that size on a 37% revenue increase is a function of fixed cost absorption at the pits.

Cost hedging is targeted rather than blanket. Foreign currency exposure in BRL, CLP and CAD is hedged selectively, and about 50% of 2027 oil exposure is covered, which protects the two input lines that move unit costs most. Silver adds 2.77 Moz and 1.6% of revenue, 0.1142 USD bn, mostly from La Coipa, giving a small second credit that earlier producers gave up when they sold their silver streams.

Strategic Expansion

Great Bear is the largest single bet. The 0.5 Moz project in Red Lake, Ontario, is a combined open-pit and underground development targeting late-2029 startup, and it is the first Canadian asset of scale in a portfolio that had been weighted toward Latin America and West Africa. Its timing sets the whole reserve calendar.

Nearer-term growth is incremental. Bald Mountain poured first gold at the Redbird 1 expansion in October 2026, Round Mountain carries a Phase X underground development, and Manh Choh supplies high-grade ore to the Fort Knox mill from a 70% interest. None of these changes the group's shape, but they defend volumes while Great Bear is built.

The funding plan is visible in the numbers. Attributable capex of 1.1752 USD bn in FY2025, split evenly at 0.5878 USD bn sustaining and 0.5874 USD bn growth, rises to 1.5 USD bn in FY2026. Curlew Basin in Washington and Lobo-Marte in Chile remain behind that queue as longer-dated options rather than committed spend.

Risks & Outlook

The clearest risk is the shape of FY2026. Guidance of 1.84 to 1.86 Moz against 1.97 Moz delivered, combined with all-in sustaining cost of 1,850 to 1,900 USD/oz against 1,571 USD/oz, means less metal at a higher unit cost in the same year capex rises to 1.5 USD bn. If the gold price holds, the margin survives; if it does not, the investment year becomes a squeeze.

Reserve depth is the second concern. The 20.9 Moz reserve at 0.85 g/t supports a 10-year mine life, the shortest among the senior producers covered here, and silver's 11.6 Moz at 27.7 g/t carries the same horizon. Mining low-grade ounces means annual replacement is not optional, and a slip in the Great Bear timetable would shorten the runway rather than merely delay it.

Jurisdiction rounds out the list. Tasiast in Mauritania is the only operating asset outside the OECD and simultaneously the highest-margin mine, so the return and the political exposure sit in the same country. A fiscal revision, an export change or a security incident there would hit the portfolio harder than the asset's share of tonnes suggests.

Outlook: a low-leverage producer with genuine spot leverage, a concentrated but high-margin core and one large Canadian project that has to land on schedule. The profile closes with a VerityRank Score of 82/100.
