FARO Technologies, Inc.

FARO

FARO Technologies, Inc. is the American company that made three-dimensional measurement portable. Founded in 1982 and headquartered at Lake Mary, Florida, FARO reported USD 342.4 million of sales in fiscal 2024 and employed 1,181 full-time staff. Its products — the Quantum FaroArm portable measurement arm, the Vantage laser tracker and the Focus and Freestyle 3D scanners — took inspection out of the metrology laboratory and onto the factory floor. In 2025 the company was acquired by AMETEK at USD 44.00 per share, a transaction completed on 21 July 2025 that ended its Nasdaq listing.

Strengths: FARO's franchise is a pure-play geometry business: essentially all revenue comes from portable 3D measurement hardware, software and service, with no diversification diluting engineering focus. The portable arm and laser tracker are genuinely differentiated categories — a FaroArm can be carried to an aircraft wing or a car body-in-white and measure it in place, which no bridge coordinate measuring machine can do — and the company's carbon-fibre arm construction, laser interferometry modules and temperature-compensated calibration are the technical assets behind that portability. Its customer base spans automotive body-in-white tryout, aerospace large-structure assembly and on-site industrial quality comparison.
Weaknesses: FARO's independence ended because scale proved insufficient. Sales fell 4.6% to USD 342.4 million in 2024 from USD 358.8 million, with a net loss of USD 9.1 million, and the company had already outsourced all manufacturing to Sanmina in 2022 — closing its own production at Lake Mary, Exton, Stuttgart and Portugal — which removed vertical control over the supply chain precisely as competitors deepened theirs. Being absorbed into AMETEK's Ultra Precision Technologies gives the brand a larger balance sheet, but its roadmap is now set inside a diversified parent alongside Creaform rather than by an independent metrology company.

The acquisition by AMETEK consolidates a specific slice of the market. AMETEK already owned Creaform, a Canadian handheld 3D scanning business, and adding FARO brings articulated measurement arms and laser trackers into the same division. The two portfolios overlap only partly — Creaform specialises in optical scanning, FARO in contact and laser-tracked measurement — so the combination covers more of the portable measurement workflow than either did alone. For FARO's existing customers the practical consequence is uncertainty about product roadmaps and service continuity, which is why acquisition transitions in metrology tend to be watched closely by the aerospace and automotive programmes that depend on a specific instrument's calibration history.

Business Nature

FARO operates a fab-light model rather than owning production. Manufacturing was outsourced to Sanmina Corporation in a transition completed at the beginning of the third quarter of 2022, covering products previously built at FARO's own plants in Lake Mary Florida, Exton Pennsylvania, Stuttgart Germany and Portugal. What remains inside the company is design, software and calibration: carbon-fibre arm structures, laser interferometry modules and scanner optics are specified by FARO engineering, and field accuracy is maintained through temperature-compensated calibration rather than in-house machining. Following the AMETEK acquisition completed on 21 July 2025, FARO operates inside AMETEK's Ultra Precision Technologies division alongside the Canadian 3D scanning brand Creaform.

Corporate Report

FARO Technologies, Inc. is a United States portable 3D measurement company founded in 1982 and headquartered in Lake Mary, Florida. It reported sales of USD 342.4 million in fiscal 2024 and employed 1,181 full-time staff before being acquired by AMETEK in July 2025.

Corporate Snapshot

FARO makes the instruments that take dimensional inspection out of the laboratory. Its Quantum FaroArm articulated measurement arms, Vantage laser trackers and Focus 3D scanners are portable enough to be carried to the object being measured — an aircraft wing, a car body-in-white, a process plant — which distinguishes the company from the bridge coordinate measuring machines that dominate laboratory metrology.

Essentially all revenue comes from geometry. There is no diversification into unrelated instruments, which concentrates FARO's engineering effort but leaves it without a cushion when capital spending on automotive and aerospace tooling slows.

Ownership Change

In May 2025 AMETEK agreed to acquire FARO at USD 44.00 per share in cash, and the transaction closed on 21 July 2025. FARO ceased to be a separately listed company and now sits inside AMETEK's Ultra Precision Technologies division alongside the Canadian 3D scanning brand Creaform. The combination creates a substantial portable measurement portfolio under one parent, though it also means FARO's roadmap is set by a diversified industrial group rather than by an independent metrology company.

Challenges & Outlook

The acquisition followed a period of contraction. Sales fell 4.6% to USD 342.4 million in 2024 from USD 358.8 million, and the company recorded a net loss of USD 9.1 million. Product sales declined 6.6% while service revenue grew 2.5%, a mix shift that reduces the pull-through of new instrument placements.

The deeper structural decision came earlier: FARO outsourced all manufacturing to Sanmina in 2022, closing its own production in Lake Mary, Exton, Stuttgart and Portugal. That removed fixed cost and capital intensity, but surrendered vertical control over the supply chain at a time when competitors such as Hexagon, ZEISS and Renishaw were moving in the opposite direction. Under AMETEK the brand gains a larger balance sheet, but its future depends on group investment priorities rather than on independent strategy. VerityRank Score of 84/100.

Measurement Portfolio

FARO's instruments cover the range of measurement problems that cannot be brought to a laboratory. The Quantum FaroArm is an articulated arm carrying a laser line probe, small enough to be carried to a car body-in-white during tryout and used to compare a stamped panel against its nominal CAD model on the spot. The Vantage laser tracker extends the same principle to much larger volumes — aircraft wings, wind turbine components, large machine tools — by tracking a reflected beam to targets placed across a structure, achieving accuracy over tens of metres. The Focus and Freestyle scanners capture as-built geometry of buildings and industrial plant.

The common thread is temperature-compensated calibration. Portable measurement instruments operate in environments with no thermal control, so accuracy depends on actively correcting for the expansion and contraction of the arm or tracker structure itself. FARO builds that compensation into both the hardware and the CAM2 software that reports the result, which is what allows a portable instrument to produce a number an aerospace customer will accept as inspectable evidence.

Essentially all revenue comes from geometry — portable arms, trackers, scanners and the software that drives them. There is no diversification into unrelated instrument lines. That concentration is a strength in engineering terms and a vulnerability in financial ones, since a slowdown in automotive tooling or aerospace programme spending reaches the entire revenue base at once.
