Uni-Trend Technology (China) Co., Ltd.

UNI-T

Uni-Trend Technology (China) Co., Ltd., which trades under the brand UNI-T, is one of Asia's highest-volume developers and manufacturers of test and measurement instruments. The business dates to 1988, when it began selling measurement products in Shenzhen, and the UNI-T brand was launched in 1997. Its headquarters sit in the Songshan Lake high-tech zone of Dongguan, Guangdong, where it relocated in 2012. The listed company was incorporated in 2003 and floated on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's Science and Technology Innovation Board (STAR Market) in February 2021 as 688628. It employed 1,651 people at the end of fiscal 2025.

Scale is the defining characteristic. UNI-T offers more than a thousand product models spanning dozens of measurement units, produced in volumes most instrumentation companies never approach: in fiscal 2025 it made 8.156 million instruments and sold 8.320 million, against stated annual capacity of more than 10 million units across its Songshan Lake, Heyuan and Vietnam plants. It competes in four product lines - general meters, professional meters, temperature and environmental meters, and test instruments - making it one of the few companies anywhere offering handheld electrical meters, high-voltage power test gear, thermal imaging and benchtop laboratory instruments under one roof.

The meter families are the commercial core: digital multimeters, clamp meters, voltage and continuity testers, insulation and earth resistance testers, power quality analysers, battery internal resistance testers, wireless high-voltage phase testers and intrinsically safe explosion-proof models. Recent flagship products include the UT197 industrial multimeter with true-RMS measurement, 0.015% accuracy and IP67 sealing, and explosion-proof thermal cameras such as the UTi640Ex, with a 640x512 detector and Ex ib IIC T4 Gb certification. The instrument line covers oscilloscopes to a 13 GHz bandwidth, eight-channel high-resolution scopes, waveform generators, spectrum and network analysers, programmable power supplies and electronic loads.

Growth is shifting toward professional rather than purely mass-market demand. Professional meters, the smallest line by revenue at RMB 111.0 million, carry the highest gross margin at 51.2%, and the group is pushing oscilloscopes, thermal imagers and AI-assisted instruments. It also invests upstream, holding a minority stake in Suzhou Xunxin Microelectronics, a supplier of high-speed data-conversion chips sampling above 5 GSa/s, and backing the tactile-sensing developer PaXini Tech through a fund, while agreeing in 2026 to take 51% voting control of Zhejiang Xincedar Communication, an optical and electromagnetic measurement specialist.

UNI-T's market identity rests on accessible pricing and near-universal availability. Electricians, DIY makers, university teaching laboratories and factory maintenance teams treat the brand as a value-for-money default, buying through more than 80 countries, some 400 distributors, more than 200 Chinese dealers and mainstream e-commerce platforms, alongside ODM manufacturing for well-known Western brands. Volume manufacturing, catalogue breadth and price-performance leadership define the company far more than any single premium product, and the strategic question it now faces is whether its fast-growing professional lines can lift profitability faster than entry-level meters lose margin to commoditisation.

Business Nature

Uni-Trend is a vertically integrated manufacturer rather than an outsourced brand. Production runs through company-owned plants at Songshan Lake in Dongguan and at Heyuan, both in Guangdong Province, China, plus a plant in Vietnam, with a further production site in Changzhou, Jiangsu. The FY2025 report states that the group's products are made mainly through in-house processes, while integrated circuits, printed circuit boards, displays, passive components, plastic and metal parts, probes and test leads are purchased from qualified suppliers.

What UNI-T keeps in-house is the work that determines measurement performance: circuit design, board assembly, product build, calibration and final testing, supported by 383 engineers and 26 core technologies. Manufacturing is coordinated through an Oracle ERP platform, product lifecycle management and shop-floor execution systems. Volume automation underpins a catalogue of a thousand-plus models: output reaches 8.156 million units and sales 8.320 million a year against capacity above 10 million. Brand sales run make-to-stock and overseas ODM make-to-order, with the Vietnamese plant absorbing tariff-exposed export volumes.

Industry Rankings

Corporate Report

Uni-Trend Technology (China) Co., Ltd. (SSE STAR Market: 688628), trading as UNI-T, is a Dongguan-based test and measurement instrument maker among Asia's largest suppliers of handheld electrical meters. Fiscal 2025 revenue reached RMB 1.2208 billion, up 7.99%, on sales of 8.320 million instruments.

Industry Position

UNI-T sells more than a thousand models, combining general meters, professional power and high-voltage instruments, temperature and environmental meters, and benchtop test instruments. In fiscal 2025 it produced 8.156 million units against capacity of more than 10 million, and employed 1,651 people, of whom 383 worked in research and development.

Revenue is anchored in general meters at RMB 672.8 million (55.1% of main-business revenue), then temperature and environmental meters at RMB 240.9 million, test instruments at RMB 181.1 million and professional meters at RMB 111.0 million. Overseas sales provided 54.6% of main-business revenue against 44.2% in mainland China, so unit economics and catalogue breadth matter more than price points.

Competitive Advantages

The core advantage is manufacturing scale combined with self-developed technology. UNI-T spends RMB 145.9 million a year on research, equal to 11.95% of revenue, and holds 550 patents, including 111 invention patents, plus 26 core technologies spanning circuit protection, sampling, signal processing and image processing.

Distribution reinforces that scale. The brand reaches more than 80 countries through nearly 400 distributors, supported by subsidiaries in Hong Kong, the United States and Germany. Own-brand distribution earns a 45.6% gross margin and self-operated e-commerce 55.4%, well above the 36.4% from ODM work, and the top five customers account for 26.4% of sales.

Strategic Expansion

A Vietnamese plant began operating in 2025 and, after a ramp that pushed group gross margin down to 43.37%, reached batch delivery in the fourth quarter and full-scale delivery in the first half of 2026. It now works alongside Songshan Lake and Heyuan to shorten lead times and cut tariff exposure. First-half 2026 revenue rose 32.02% to RMB 815.1 million, with overseas sales up 51.08%.

In 2026 the company agreed to acquire 51% voting control of Zhejiang Xincedar Communication, adding optical reflectometers, fibre sensing and electromagnetic measurement, and it holds minority stakes in the chip developer Suzhou Xunxin Microelectronics and, through a fund, in the tactile sensor specialist PaXini Tech. Development now targets new-energy, photovoltaic and data-centre testing.

Risks & Outlook

Gross margin is the principal vulnerability. Consolidated margin fell 1.85 percentage points to 43.37% and ODM margin dropped 7.06 points to 36.4%, reflecting commoditised entry-level pricing and the cost of a new overseas plant. Net profit fell 17.54% to RMB 151.2 million even as revenue grew, and with overseas sales settled in US dollars, currency and trade-policy shifts flow straight into earnings.

The outlook depends on whether premium instruments lift the mix faster than mass-market meters lose margin. Professional meters already earn 51.2% gross margin and test instruments grew 16.85%. With capacity above 10 million units, roughly 400 distributors and research intensity near 12% of revenue, UNI-T has the scale to defend its volume base while climbing the value ladder.
