HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION

Hioki

HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION is a Japanese manufacturer of electrical measuring instruments, founded in June 1935 and headquartered at 81 Koizumi in the city of Ueda, Nagano Prefecture. The company designs, manufactures and services test and measurement equipment for engineers who need to know exactly how much current flows, how much resistance a cell develops, or how clean a power supply is. Hioki is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market under ticker 6866 and reported net sales of JPY 40.53 billion in the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, with operating profit of JPY 6.79 billion and net income of JPY 5.46 billion.

Its reputation rests above all on measuring electrical energy and batteries. Hioki's battery instruments read the internal resistance and open-circuit voltage of cells, modules and complete packs simultaneously, which is how battery makers decide whether a unit is good enough to ship. The family spans the BT3554-50 Battery Tester, the BT3562A, BT3563A and BT3564 Battery HiTesters for pack and module testing, and the higher-frequency BT4560, BT6065 and BT6075 instruments used on low-resistance cells. Demand tracks the electric-vehicle and stationary energy-storage industries, and Hioki again named the battery market a growth driver.

The second franchise is power measurement: power meters and analyzers, power quality analyzers and loggers, wide-band current probes and sensors. These instruments certify inverter and motor efficiency, audit power quality in factories and substations, and increasingly validate the power infrastructure inside data centres. Hioki also builds LCR meters and impedance analyzers, insulation resistance meters and megohmmeters, electrical safety testers, digital multimeters, clamp meters, signal calibrators, multichannel data loggers and recorders, and bare-board testing systems, offering more than 300 product models and roughly 1,100 industrial property rights.

Manufacturing is almost entirely Japanese. All three production facilities sit in Nagano Prefecture: the Head Office Factory on the Hioki Forest Hills campus in Ueda, the Ueda Factory II established in 2024 in the Nikoda district of Ueda, and the Sakaki Factory established in 2021 in Sakaki-machi. Hioki has said it is optimising these plants to hold enough capacity for at least JPY 50 billion in consolidated sales, a level it approached in 2025 and expects to pass in 2026.

Hioki sells into more than 80 countries through 11 overseas subsidiaries and a distributor network, with overseas sales at 63.6% of revenue as of December 2025. The group includes Hioki USA, Hioki (Shanghai) Measurement Technologies, Hioki Singapore, Hioki Korea, Hioki India, Hioki Europe GmbH, Hioki Taiwan, PT Hioki Electric Indonesia, Hioki Electric (Thailand), Hioki MEA FZCO in Dubai and Hioki Electric Vietnam. Hioki spends about 14.0% of sales on R&D, and roughly one employee in three is an R&D engineer.

What distinguishes Hioki is a narrow technical focus combined with deep vertical integration. Rather than competing across industrial electronics generally, it concentrates on the measurement chain from sensor to instrument, keeping design, manufacturing, calibration and service in-house. That is why its published targets centre on lifting the overseas operating margin above 20% and the overseas sales ratio to 70% or more under its long-term policy, Vision 2030.

Business Nature

Hioki manufactures almost everything it sells, in Japan. The company runs three production facilities in Nagano Prefecture: the Head Office Factory on the Hioki Forest Hills campus in Ueda, the main plant since 1990; the Ueda Factory II, established in 2024 at Nikoda in Ueda; and the Sakaki Factory, established in 2021 in Sakaki-machi and operated inside the premises of a partner manufacturer. Hioki has said it is optimising these plants to secure enough capacity for at least JPY 50 billion in consolidated sales.

The model is unusually concentrated. Rather than spreading assembly across low-cost countries, Hioki keeps design, tooling, assembly, calibration and repair close to its engineers, and makes in-house the sensors, current probes and instruments that carry its name. It uses partner manufacturing selectively, framing Sakaki as collaboration rather than outsourcing.

That concentration explains much of Hioki's quality reputation, since one region is held to a single process standard. It is also the main structural risk: an earthquake or labour shortage in one prefecture would touch nearly all production at once, and a strong yen raises the cost of exporting instruments made at home.

Corporate Report

HIOKI E.E. CORPORATION is a Japanese specialist in electrical measuring instruments, founded in 1935 and headquartered in Ueda, Nagano Prefecture. Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market under ticker 6866, it reported net sales of JPY 40.53 billion for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, up 3.2%, with operating profit of JPY 6.79 billion and net income of JPY 5.46 billion. It employs 1,153 people and earns 63.6% of revenue abroad.

Industry Position

Hioki occupies a specialised niche: instruments that tell manufacturers whether electrical energy behaves correctly. Its strongest franchise is battery testing. The BT3562 and BT3563 and their successors, the BT3561A, BT3562A and BT3563A Battery HiTesters, measure internal resistance and open-circuit voltage simultaneously, an operation performed millions of times daily on electric-vehicle cell, module and pack lines. That places Hioki inside the electric-vehicle and energy-storage supply chain, which it named a growth driver for 2025.

The second franchise is power measurement: power meters and analyzers, power quality analyzers and loggers, wide-band current probes and voltage sensors, used to certify inverter and motor efficiency, audit power quality in factories and substations, and validate data-centre power. It also makes LCR meters, insulation testers, digital multimeters, recorders and bare-board testing, across more than 300 product models.

Competitive Advantages

Hioki's principal advantage is depth of specialisation with vertical integration. It builds its own sensors, probes and instruments and calibrates and services them itself, so the chain from transducer to displayed value stays under one roof, underpinning the accuracy battery engineers rely on when micro-ohms decide whether a cell passes.

Manufacturing is concentrated in Japan, within Nagano Prefecture, keeping engineering close to the production floor. The company commits roughly 14.0% of sales to R&D. Distribution is broad for this scale: more than 80 countries served through 11 overseas subsidiaries.

Strategic Expansion

The Sakaki Factory opened in 2021 and the Ueda Factory II began operating in July 2024 at Nikoda in Ueda, with the stated aim of holding capacity for at least JPY 50 billion in consolidated sales. It guided to JPY 43.0 billion of revenue for 2026.

Geographically, Hioki established HIOKI MEA FZCO in Dubai in 2024 and HIOKI ELECTRIC VIETNAM COMPANY LIMITED in Hanoi in 2025, extending reach into Middle East, African and Southeast Asian energy-storage markets. China is the largest overseas operation, with sales of roughly JPY 11.3 billion in 2025 per S&P Global geography data.

Risks & Outlook

The clearest risks are demand cyclicality and currency. Hioki's revenue depends on capital investment by battery, semiconductor and automotive customers, which is why 2025 produced record sales but 9.8% lower operating profit as one-off 90th anniversary costs and planned digital transformation investment weighed on margins. Hioki reports in yen while earning most revenue abroad, so exchange rates swing results: the average US dollar rate moved from JPY 140.55 to JPY 151.57 in one year.

Competition is intensifying across every category Hioki serves. The company publishes no unit production capacity, so no figure for annual output of battery testers, current probes or recorders can be verified. Concentration in one Japanese prefecture is a quality asset but also a single-point exposure. Hioki nonetheless ends 2025 with a strong balance sheet, guidance for 2026 growth, and a policy of pushing overseas operating margin above 20% and the overseas sales ratio toward 70%.
