Tektronix, Inc.

Tektronix

Tektronix, Inc. is an American test and measurement company and the originator of the commercial triggered oscilloscope. Founded in 1946 in Oregon by Howard Vollum, Jack Murdock, Miles Tippery and Glenn McDowell, it built the Model 511, the instrument that turned the oscilloscope from a laboratory curiosity into the defining tool of electronics. Nearly eighty years later it remains one of the best-known names in electronic measurement, and its scope families, from the TBS1000C to the flagship 7 Series DPO, remain the reference competitors are judged against. Its principal address is 14150 SW Karl Braun Drive, Beaverton, Oregon. Ownership is the fact most often reported incorrectly. Tektronix was acquired by Danaher in 2007, became a Fortive operating company when Fortive separated from Danaher in 2016, and since June 28, 2025 has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Ralliant Corporation (NYSE: RAL), created by the spin-off of Fortive's Precision Technologies segment. Ralliant is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina; Tektronix is not, and its press releases are still datelined from Beaverton. Within Ralliant the Tektronix brand anchors the Test and Measurement segment alongside Keithley Instruments, Sonix and EA Elektro-Automatik. The portfolio rests on four pillars. Oscilloscopes: the 7 Series DPO, the 5 and 6 Series MSO mixed-signal scopes, the 3 Series MDO, the DPO70000SX performance instruments and the TBS basic scopes, with a deep probe range. Signal generation: AWG5200 and AWG70000B arbitrary waveform generators, AFG31000 function generators and spectrum analysers. Precision direct-current measurement through Keithley: source measure units such as the 2400 and 2600B series, the MP5000 Series modular precision test system, electrometers, picoammeters, nanovoltmeters and 7.5- to 8.5-digit multimeters. Power: bidirectional programmable supplies, regenerative loads and high-power test systems from EA Elektro-Automatik, plus multi-brand calibration and repair worldwide. IsoVu shows where the company competes best. Silicon carbide and gallium nitride devices switch hundreds of volts in nanoseconds, and conventional differential probes lose the detail. IsoVu Generation 2 voltage probes, with up to 1 GHz bandwidth, a 2500 V differential range and 160 dB common-mode rejection at DC, and the IsoVu isolated current probes launched in November 2024 as the first to use RF isolation, solve that directly. In September 2025 came the 7 Series DPO and the MP5000 platform; in September 2026 the DPO718AX, an eight-channel 25 GHz oscilloscope, and the EA-ELR 21000 regenerative system for 800-volt AI data-centre power. Manufacturing keeps critical work close to the engineers who design it. Tektronix builds in Beaverton, Oregon; Keithley makes its low-level precision instruments in Solon, Ohio; Tektronix China runs a manufactory in Pudong, Shanghai; and EA Elektro-Automatik adds high-power capacity in Germany. Ralliant's latest annual report lists seven Test and Measurement facilities across the United States, China, Germany and India, and Tektronix states it has offices in 21 countries, with its parent reporting sales into more than 90 countries. What is not disclosed matters just as much: Tektronix's own revenue, headcount and unit volumes are not reported separately. Its parent discloses only the Test and Measurement segment, which generated USD 801.5 million in fiscal 2025, so estimates above that level, including one of about USD 1.25 billion for Tektronix alone, cannot be reconciled with the filings.

Business Nature

Tektronix runs a hybrid manufacturing model: critical work stays in-house near the engineering teams that design it, while commodity content is bought in. It owns and operates its principal manufacturing and assembly operations rather than using contract manufacturers for finished instruments, reflecting how much of the product value sits in analogue design, shielding and calibration. The largest site is the Beaverton, Oregon campus, covering headquarters, R&D and production of high-performance oscilloscopes and probes. Keithley Instruments, LLC, a Tektronix company registered in Ohio, makes its low-level measurement instruments at its Solon, Ohio plant; those instruments rely on guarded low-noise analogue design and ultra-low-leakage switching that are hard to outsource without losing yield. Tektronix China Co., Limited runs a manufactory in Pudong, Shanghai for Asian demand, and EA Elektro-Automatik GmbH adds high-power manufacturing in Germany. Ralliant's latest annual report lists seven Test and Measurement facilities across the US, China, Germany and India. Tektronix publishes no plant-level capacity or volumes, so claims of annual output in the hundreds of thousands cannot be verified.

Industry Rankings

Corporate Report

Tektronix created the commercial triggered oscilloscope in 1946 and has stayed near the front of test and measurement ever since. It is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Ralliant Corporation (NYSE: RAL), spun off from Fortive on June 28, 2025 and reported inside Ralliant's Test and Measurement segment.

Industry Position

Tektronix is a top-tier supplier of oscilloscopes and related instruments, competing with Keysight, Rohde & Schwarz, Teledyne LeCroy and Yokogawa. Its strongest ground is high-performance scopes and wide-bandgap power-device characterisation. IsoVu is a real differentiator: Generation 2 probes pair up to 1 GHz bandwidth with a 2500 V differential range and 160 dB common-mode rejection at DC.

Reported figures are smaller than most estimates. Ralliant does not report brand-level results, and the whole Test and Measurement segment generated USD 801.5 million in fiscal 2025, down from USD 937.5 million a year earlier, so any figure above USD 800 million attributed to Tektronix alone contradicts the parent's audited reporting. Headcount is usually quoted at about 3,000, last reported in 2023.

Competitive Advantages

The first advantage is eighty years of measurement credibility. Tektronix instruments defined several product categories and its flagship lines still set benchmarks: the 7 Series DPO launched in September 2025, and the DPO718AX announced in September 2026 is an eight-channel oscilloscope running to 25 GHz. Specifying engineers treat Tektronix as a default, yielding long replacement cycles and a large installed base.

The second is portfolio breadth under one brand. One supplier now covers a signal chain from generator to scope to probe to source measure unit. Keithley adds 70 years of low-level measurement expertise and roughly 500 products. The third is service reach: Tektronix calibrates instruments from thousands of manufacturers, not only its own.

Strategic Expansion

Under Ralliant, Tektronix sits at the centre of three growth vectors the parent names publicly: electrification, grid modernisation and defence. The 2024 acquisition of EA Elektro-Automatik added high-power programmable supplies and regenerative loads, and the EA-ELR 21000 announced in September 2026 targets 800-volt DC architectures for AI data centres, with 1.92 megawatts of capacity and 95% energy recovery.

Product investment follows the same logic. The MP5000 Series modular precision test system and its 200-volt MSMU200-2 module carry Keithley technology into high-channel automated test. Software travels with the hardware: TekScope PC, KickStart, TekDrive and the Initial State cloud platform turn instruments into managed data pipelines. Tektronix states it has offices in 21 countries; Ralliant reports sales into over 90 countries.

Risks & Outlook

The dominant risk is end-market cyclicality. Demand tracks semiconductor capital spending and consumer electronics design cycles, and Ralliant attributed the segment's falling fiscal 2025 revenue largely to a large semiconductor customer project a year earlier. Concentration at the top of the scope market exposes Tektronix to Keysight and Rohde & Schwarz, and sales outside the United States were 48.7% of Ralliant's total.

Goodwill is a live issue at parent level: Ralliant recorded a USD 1.44 billion non-cash impairment against the Test and Measurement reporting unit for fiscal 2025 after reduced expectations for EA Elektro-Automatik, though the Tektronix trade name itself passed its impairment test. The outlook turns on whether the AI data-centre and wide-bandgap power cycles become sustained orders, and on whether Tektronix's standalone economics become visible under a parent that now has a full reporting year behind it. The franchise is strong while the disclosure is thin, placing Tektronix in the middle of the top tier rather than at its head, for a VerityRank Score of 89/100.
