Grimmway Enterprises, Inc.

Grimmway Farms

Grimmway Enterprises, Inc. is a private California grower, shipper and processor of carrots, potatoes and organic vegetables, trading as Grimmway Farms and presented since 2026 as Grimmway Produce Group. It is headquartered in Bakersfield, in Kern County, California. Grimmway is not a Fortune Global 500 company: it publishes no revenue at all, and even the highest third-party estimate, around US$1 to 1.5 billion, is an order of magnitude below the US$33.2 billion entry threshold used for the 2026 ranking.

The business traces its roots to a produce stand opened by brothers Rod and Bob Grimm in the early 1960s. The company timeline dates the incorporation of their partnership, and the start of trading as Grimmway Farms, to 1968, while Forbes uses 1969; the company itself publishes no single unambiguous founding year. Ownership is private equity: Teays River Investments, LLC, an Indiana firm backed by institutional investors including state pension funds, agreed to acquire the company in 2020, a transaction the Private Equity Stakeholder Project dates as completed in 2021. Other accounts attributing the deal to Clearlake Capital are not supported by any source found.

Scale is acreage and throughput. The group works about 95,000 acres, over 40,000 acres of conventional ground and 55,000 acres of USDA-certified organic ground, across California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Georgia and Florida, and much of that land is leased rather than owned. It runs 20 strategically placed facilities plus hundreds of sheds, processing upwards of 10 million pounds of fresh carrots a day, six days a week, year-round, from Kern County, the Pacific Northwest and the Southeast, with processing extended into the Midwest in 2026.

The portfolio runs to 135 or more products, including about 65 USDA-certified organic commodities. Cal-Organic Farms carries the organic range and Bunny-Luv the baby carrots. San Miguel Produce, a leafy-greens business from Oxnard, was added in 2024. Products go out under the group's own labels and under retailer private labels. No revenue-by-product split is published, so the claim that carrots and organic vegetables are more than 90% of revenue has no published basis.

The 2024 E. coli O121:H19 outbreak remains the most serious recent event. Organic whole and baby carrots produced by Grimmway, sold under Cal-Organic, Grimmway and other labels and distributed internationally, were linked by the FDA and CDC to the outbreak and recalled in November 2024; the final toll was 48 illnesses in 19 states, 20 hospitalisations, one death and one case of haemolytic uraemic syndrome. The FDA closed the investigation with two positive environmental samples collected outside that did not match the outbreak strain. Labour and safety findings followed: a federal judge ruled in September 2025 that Grimmway engaged in a pattern or practice of disability discrimination against farmworkers, the Department of Labor ordered US$427,456 in back wages and penalties in August 2025 over underpaid workers and unsafe housing in Washington State, and OSHA has issued 19 citations worth over US$145,342 since the 2020-21 acquisition.

Recently the group has consolidated rather than expanded by acquisition: in 2026 it unified its identity as Grimmway Produce Group, brought Cal-Organic Farms, RPE, San Miguel Produce and Tasteful Selections under one banner under President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Silveira, and extended processing into the Midwest.

Business Nature

Grimmway works about 95,000 acres, more than 40,000 of them conventional and 55,000 USDA-certified organic, and leases rather than owns much of that farmland. The processing network reaches customers across 19 states and four Canadian provinces.

Processing is owned. Twenty strategically placed facilities plus hundreds of sheds handle washing, peeling, packing and cold-chain preparation from Kern County, the Pacific Northwest and the Southeast, with Midwest processing added in 2026.

The brand layer is owned too, but the customer-facing shelf is not always the group's own. Grimmway Farms, Cal-Organic Farms, Bunny-Luv, RPE, San Miguel Produce and Tasteful Selections sit alongside retailer private-label programmes, including Target, Publix and Trader Joe's.

Labour is a mix of direct, contract and H-2A workers: the company counted more than 6,000 jobs as dependent on it in 2025. That model has produced enforcement: the Department of Labor ordered US$427,456 in back wages and penalties in 2025 over underpaid workers and unsafe housing in Washington State.

Water is the other structural exposure. Grimmway and Bolthouse faced Cuyama Valley groundwater litigation and a local carrot boycott in 2023, and Grimmway exited that litigation during the year.

Corporate Report

Grimmway Enterprises, Inc., trading as Grimmway Farms and presented since 2026 as Grimmway Produce Group, is a private California grower, shipper and processor of carrots, potatoes and organic vegetables. Founded by brothers Rod and Bob Grimm from a roadside produce stand in the 1960s, it is headquartered in Bakersfield, Kern County, and works about 95,000 acres of conventional and certified organic ground. VerityRank places it eighth among the world's fresh vegetable brands.

Industry Position

Grimmway sits at the centre of the American carrot trade. The Private Equity Stakeholder Project put its share of the United States carrot market at up to 40-50% in September 2026, with Grimmway and Bolthouse together supplying up to 80% of American carrot production, and the group describes throughput of upwards of 10 million pounds of fresh carrots a day, six days a week, year-round.

The company is also unusually opaque for its size. It publishes no revenue, no EBITDA and no year-end headcount, and files no public financial statements, so the figures circulating for it, in the US$1 to 1.5 billion range, are third-party database estimates that cannot be verified. What is verifiable is the product mix: about 65 USDA-certified organic commodities, and produce grown entirely in the United States.

Competitive Advantages

The first advantage is geographic spread built on leased land. Twenty strategically placed facilities sit across growing regions in 19 states and four Canadian provinces, supported by hundreds of sheds, which keeps processing close to harvest and spreads weather and water risk across California, Arizona, the Pacific Northwest, the Southeast and, from 2026, the Midwest.

The second is a brand portfolio that covers conventional, organic, potato and foodservice demand under one group. Cal-Organic Farms and Bunny-Luv carry the organic and baby-carrot ranges, RPE handles potatoes, San Miguel Produce brought leafy greens in 2024, and Tasteful Selections supplies bite-size potatoes. The group sells both under its own labels and under retailer private labels.

Strategic Expansion

Growth has come through acquisition and consolidation rather than new geography. Earlier deals brought King Pak Potato, Belridge Packing, Mike Yurosek and Sons, which carried the Bunny-Luv baby-carrot brand, Cal-Organic Farms and processing plants in Washington and Georgia. San Miguel Produce followed in 2024, and RPE and Tasteful Selections are now presented inside Grimmway Produce Group.

In 2026 the group unified its corporate identity and website under one banner under President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Silveira, extended processing into the Midwest and made senior appointments covering finance and organic vegetables. It remains wholly controlled by Teays River Investments, whose own backers include state pension funds, and Micah Vincent became chief executive of that investor in 2025.

Risks & Outlook

The 2024 E. coli O121:H19 outbreak is the clearest risk precedent: organic whole and baby carrots sold under Cal-Organic and Grimmway labels, and distributed internationally, were recalled in November 2024 after 48 illnesses in 19 states, 20 hospitalisations, one death and one case of haemolytic uraemic syndrome. The FDA closed the case without matching the outbreak strain in environmental samples, while maintaining that traceback evidence pointed to the recalled carrots.

Operational and labour exposure has accumulated since the 2020-21 acquisition: a September 2025 federal ruling that the company engaged in a pattern or practice of disability discrimination against farmworkers, a Department of Labor order to pay US$427,456 over underpaid workers and unsafe housing in Washington State, and 19 OSHA citations worth over US$145,342, about half still contested as of August 2026. With revenue undisclosed and private-equity ownership in place, external scrutiny of both compliance and valuation is likely to continue. VerityRank Score of 83/100.
