Yunex Traffic GmbH
Yunex Traffic
Yunex Traffic is the answer to a question the ITS industry rarely asks: what happens when a conglomerate decides road traffic is no longer core? Siemens carved its intelligent-traffic business out as an independent company in 2021 and sold it to Italian infrastructure group Mundys, which inherited something unusual — the SCOOT and SCATS adaptive signal algorithms and the Sitraffic controller family, running in more than 600 cities. The standalone company now turns over roughly EUR 680 million a year with 100% of revenue in ITS, supported by about 3,300 employees.
Strengths:
• Algorithm inheritance: SCOOT and SCATS are among the most widely deployed adaptive signal-control systems ever written, and their installed base of controllers remains a captive market for Yunex upgrades.
• Sitraffic hardware family: the controller, detection and gantry range was designed to work with the software, so replacements do not require re-engineering a city's junction estate.
• Infrastructure-owner parent: Mundys operates toll roads and airports, giving Yunex a reference customer and a route into concession-funded deployment that independent vendors do not enjoy.
• Generative simulation platform: the Yutraffic Studio platform applies generative AI to traffic simulation, letting authorities test signal strategies before committing them to live networks.
• Recent national win: the contract to modernise Singapore's urban traffic signal control system is a high-visibility reference for the standalone business.
Weaknesses:
• Carve-out transition costs: separating IT, procurement and manufacturing from Siemens and rebuilding them as a standalone company takes years and absorbs management attention.
• Legacy controller exposure: a large share of revenue comes from maintaining and upgrading older Sitraffic installations rather than from new-build, which caps the growth rate.
• Limited financial transparency: as a wholly owned subsidiary of Mundys, Yunex does not publish standalone audited accounts, so customers and analysts work from partial data.
• Smaller R&D envelope: with roughly EUR 680 million of revenue the group cannot match the research budgets of the diversified competitors that surround it in national tenders.Read More ▼Show Less ▲
