Mastronardi Produce Ltd.

SUNSET

Mastronardi Produce Ltd. is a private, family-owned Canadian grower and marketer of greenhouse vegetables and berries selling under the master brand SUNSET. Based at 2100 Road 4 East, Kingsville, Ontario N9Y 2E5, it calls itself the fourth-generation family-owned pioneer of greenhouse growing in North America, was founded in Kingsville in 1954 and reports over 3,500 employees across Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Netherlands. It is not a Fortune Global 500 company: the best available revenue estimate, near CAD 2.5 billion (about US$1.8bn), is far below the US$32.2bn threshold for the 2025 list.

The business began growing under glass in Kingsville in 1954. It marked a 'Platinum Anniversary' in May 2024, seventy years on, and in May 2025 celebrated 30 years of SUNSET Campari tomatoes, the line that made the name familiar in North American retail. The company states its ownership by generation only, so no founding individual is named; President and Chief Executive Officer is Paul Mastronardi.

Production is controlled greenhouse capacity, not conventional factories. Trade press put controlled area at more than 5,000 acres, and a 2026 industry survey estimated 500 acres across six states. The largest asset, Green Empire Farms at Oneida, New York, is a 64-acre single greenhouse of about 2.78 million square feet, described when announced as the largest single greenhouse build in North America; it was incorporated in November 2016, announced in 2018 and built in phases producing from 2019. Lit greenhouses support year-round supply.

SUNSET is the master brand, covering SUNSET Campari, Flavor Bombs and Angel Sweet tomatoes with peppers, cucumbers and greenhouse berries; the portfolio includes the Backyard Farms tomato brand and the Queen of Greens leafy line. In September 2024 the company acquired full and exclusive North American rights to the Mastronardi BerryWorld America berry programme from BerryWorld. No segment information is published.

The company is privately held and entirely family-owned in its fourth generation; no private-equity or non-family majority shareholder appears in any available record, and the widely repeated claim of joint private-equity and family ownership is unsupported. A March 2018 filing with the Madison County Industrial Development Agency records the sole stockholder as Mastronardi-Produce USA, Inc., 100%. No revenue, EBITDA or profit figures and no fiscal-year reporting exist, so the only usable number is a third-party estimate of CAD 2.5 billion or more from February 2026, labelled by its publisher as directional rather than audited.

Growth has come through marketing arrangements as much as ownership. In March 2020 it took over sales and marketing for Double Diamond Farms of Leamington, Ontario, from 140 acres to 172 acres by 2021, and in November 2024 became the exclusive long-term marketer for J.C. Fresh Farms Ltd. and Orangeline Farms, 32 acres each — marketing agreements, not acquisitions. No product-safety recall or regulatory action against the company was found. The pressure is real: trade coverage in April 2026 reported Ontario greenhouse operators dimming winter LED lighting because of very high electricity rates, though that coverage profiles grower Mastronardi Farms Ltd., a different legal entity.

Business Nature

Mastronardi Produce Ltd. is a greenhouse grower and marketer: it owns part of its growing capacity and markets partner greenhouses under long-term agreements, so not all SUNSET volume is company-grown. Owned capacity is greenhouse area: trade estimates put it above 5,000 acres, including an estimated 500 acres across six states. The largest is Green Empire Farms at Oneida, New York, a 64-acre greenhouse; its March 2018 Madison County development-agency filing records the sole stockholder as Mastronardi-Produce USA, Inc., 100%. On the partner side, the company markets production it does not own: Double Diamond Farms in Ontario, under Mastronardi sales and marketing since March 2020, and J.C. Fresh Farms Ltd. and Orangeline Farms, 32 acres each, as exclusive marketer since November 2024. Berries run through rights, not glass: the September 2024 acquisition of full North American rights to Mastronardi BerryWorld America added a berry programme without owned greenhouses. No first-party site count exists, and the claim of more than ten large lit greenhouse parks cannot be verified; no third-party facility should be treated as owned.

Industry Rankings

Corporate Report

Mastronardi Produce Ltd. is a private, fourth-generation family-owned Canadian grower and marketer of greenhouse vegetables and berries, selling under the master brand SUNSET. Founded in 1954 at Kingsville, Ontario, it reports over 3,500 employees in Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Netherlands. VerityRank places it sixth among the Top 10 Fresh Vegetables Brands; it is not a Fortune Global 500 company.

Industry Position

Greenhouse vegetables are a capital-intensive, energy-intensive branch of fresh produce, and Mastronardi Produce sits at the top of the North American version of it. It describes itself as the largest vertically integrated producer and distributor of greenhouse-grown produce in North America — a regional claim, not a global one, and one that cannot be sized against published tonnage or revenue because the company reports none. Its crops are the branded end of the category: tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, berries and leafy greens grown under glass.

Position in this ranking rests on brand strength rather than disclosed scale. SUNSET is a master brand applied across the range, and Campari has worked as a variety-level brand in North American retail for three decades, which is unusual for a vegetable. That supports pricing and shelf positioning a commodity grower does not have, but it also concentrates brand, growing capacity and sales effort in one region and one commercial model.

Competitive Advantages

The first advantage is controlled greenhouse capacity of unusual size for North America. Trade estimates put the footprint above 5,000 acres, with roughly 500 acres in the United States across six states. Green Empire Farms at Oneida, New York — 64 acres, about 2.78 million square feet in a single structure — was described at announcement as the largest single greenhouse build in North America.

The second advantage is year-round supply: lit greenhouses with supplemental lighting keep North American retail programmes filled through winter instead of ceding the season to imports. The third is a commercial model that adds volume without buying glass, through exclusive long-term marketing agreements with partner greenhouses that carry the growing risk. Recognition follows: Canada's Best Managed Companies Platinum Club for a seventeenth consecutive year in May 2026, and seven Superior Taste Awards that month.

Strategic Expansion

Expansion has followed two routes. The owned route is Green Empire Farms, registered in November 2016, announced in 2018 and built in two phases entering production in 2019 and early 2020, alongside growing sites in Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, New York, Ohio and Utah. The partnership route is Double Diamond Farms of Leamington, Ontario, under Mastronardi sales and marketing since March 2020, from 140 acres to 172 acres by 2021, and the November 2024 agreements covering J.C. Fresh Farms Ltd. and Orangeline Farms, 32 acres each.

A fourth operating country, the Netherlands, appears in the company's own employee statement alongside Canada, the United States and Mexico; the internal research document omits it. What has not expanded is disclosure: no acquisition price, capital programme or site count has been published, and the frequently repeated claim that the group runs more than ten large lit greenhouse parks has no first-party basis.

Risks & Outlook

The first risk is informational. Because the company is private and publishes nothing, every revenue statement about it is an inference. The figure of CAD 2.5 billion or more published by Grocery Trade News in February 2026 is explicitly a directional third-party estimate, not a reported result, and there is no audited alternative. Product mix is equally opaque, so claims that the business exceeds 95% fresh vegetables have no source and no reliable denominator.

The operating risks are specific. Winter lit production in Ontario consumes large amounts of electricity, and trade coverage in April 2026 reported Ontario operators dimming LED lighting through winter because of very high hydro costs; that reporting profiles Mastronardi Farms Ltd., a separate entity, but the cost pressure applies to lit greenhouse production in the same region. Weather variability and the capital intensity of glass leave little room for error. Against that, growth through marketing agreements rather than purchases keeps expansion asset-light.
