Aker Solutions ASA
Aker Solutions
Aker Solutions is the North Sea's most complete heavy-weights offshore manufacturer, a Norwegian engineering and fabrication group whose roots run back to the Akers Mekaniske Verksted shipyard founded in 1841. Headquartered in Lysaker near Oslo, the company designs and builds platform topsides, jackets and FPSO modules in its own Norwegian yards at Stord, Egersund and Verdal, and is a European leader in floating offshore wind foundations and carbon-capture offshore platforms. In 2025 revenue rose 19% to NOK 63.2 billion with new orders of NOK 66.4 billion, and renewable and low-carbon work now accounts for roughly one fifth of its portfolio — one of the highest clean-energy shares among offshore fabricators.
Strengths: The in-house fabrication base in Norway (Stord, Egersund, Verdal) is one of the few complete heavy-yard networks left in Western Europe, giving the company structural proximity to North Sea operators at a time when competitors have outsourced hull work to Asia. Its floating wind and CCS franchise is among the most advanced in the industry, underpinned by long-standing technology partnerships and a 20% clean-energy revenue share. A maintenance and modification alliance with Aker BP, extended into late 2026, secures a stable base of North Sea M&M work, and the company's stake in the OneSubsea joint venture (with SLB and Subsea7) adds subsea production-systems exposure without diluting its fabrication focus.
Weaknesses: The European labour cost base makes Aker Solutions structurally more expensive than Asian yards on comparable steel work, limiting its competitiveness on commodity FPSO hulls. North Sea market maturation means domestic demand is flat-to-declining, forcing the company to grow internationally in Brazil and Asia. Several offshore wind projects have faced permitting delays in Europe, pushing some near-term engineering activity to the right.Read More ▼Show Less ▲
